And most of us have a default answer. Even when things feel like they're crashing all around us … or we're full of joy because something wonderful happened … we default to a four-letter word to shield ourselves — and the person asking — from the truth. Our Chief Success Officer, Ted Capshaw, put this word on our "unacceptable" list here at AWAI … The word is "fine." And we are not to accept it as an answer from anyone in the company. It started during the lockdown … we'd check in with each person on the team once a week to make sure everyone was safe and sound, and as a way to ensure we were all staying connected. We were all going through a shared experience … yet the experience was so different for each of us. In digging into the "fine," we found our team members didn't want to complain … "others had it worse." And we also found they didn't want to share feelings of joy or gratitude … because again, others were struggling. By removing this default response, and asking for more, we gave everyone the permission to be honest … with each other, and themselves. Even though the world has since opened again, there's still a lot going on … and each of us has "stuff" going on inside … Whether it's fear or anxiety related to things in the news … something happening in your personal life … your writing career … Or if you're keeping your happiness inside because you fear others can't take it right now — [today's Monday Morning Jumpstart]( is for you.
