And why they mean MUCH great income to writers [The Writer’ s Life]( May 11, 2022 "Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort." – Franklin D. Roosevelt Hi {NAME}, We used to call the most profitable writing niches "The Big Three" … - Financial - Health - Self-improvement Sure, there were other niches where writers were making money … But if you wanted to make the big money, you chose one of the three. Back then, the big marketing dollars were spent on direct mail, so the most desirable copywriting opportunity was writing sales letters. Along with a sizable fee for writing the letter, copywriters were paid royalties based on the number of pieces mailed. So, it made sense to write for niches that mailed A LOT of letters. And when it came to volume … The Big Three were at the top. Enter the internet … 😉 As online marketing channels took hold and started to grow, and ways to track results emerged, The Big Three held strong as good money makers … And copywriting royalties slowly transitioned from per piece mailed to a % of overall sales made. This change allowed writers to make great money in a variety of niches, because instead of relying on mail volume … Their royalties would come straight out of the revenue earned. That's why today, you can make a great living as a writer in almost any niche imaginable as a sales letter writer. Here's how it all works … Let's say you charge a company $5,000 to write a sales letter … which is the very low-end of the range. As part of your fee, you'd also negotiate a royalty — typically somewhere from 2% to 5% on every sale made from your letter. That's on top of your up-front writing fee. It's like a commission … or a bonus. If the letter you write sells $100,000 worth of product when it mails the next month, and you have a 3% royalty arrangement … That's an additional $3,000 … for no extra work. And it gets better … Because every single time they use your letter, you get another royalty check … for as long as they continue to mail it! And that's only ONE letter … Because here's where royalties get REALLY fun … While you're collecting your first royalty check, you're working on a new letter. Maybe it's for the same client … or maybe it's for a new one. It doesn't really matter, because once you're done with it, a second royalty machine starts up. And once again, you start receiving royalty checks for your new letter … on top of the checks from the first. The next month, ANOTHER letter. And another royalty machine, on top of the other two. See how this adds up pretty fast? And all of that's on top of the fees you're earning each time you write one. I have copywriters here at AWAI that get paid royalties on 10 letters a month … And we have letters that AWAI has been paying royalties on for 5, 10, and even 20 years. Imagine that … Getting paid royalties on a letter you wrote 20 years ago!! It's why I'm surprised when writers shy away from [learning sales letters](. I get that they feel "harder." But here's the thing … Along with the big money, the skill of sales letter writing can be applied to every other copy project out there. The assumption is: if you can write a sales letter, you can write anything. AND your copy will be more effective. Which means you're worth more. Luckily, we have access to some of the top copywriters in our industry — one of them happens to be our senior Copy Chief, Sandy Franks. If you don't know Sandy, she's been working and writing in the direct-response industry for 30 years — and trained some of the best copywriters working today! [More on that here.]( In any case, wherever you are in your writing journey, writing sales letters is a financially valuable skill worth learning … It gives you a solid foundation in persuasion that can be used to make money in a variety of ways for the rest of your life … writing about anything you're interested in … from anywhere in the world you choose to be. Tomorrow we're going to dig in to one copywriting lesson every writer should master … It's arguably the most important piece of ANY copy you write.
