There’s nothing simpler! [The Writer’ s Life]( May 5, 2022 "No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another." ― Charles Dickens {NAME}, Have you ever been online and stumbled across a website or blog and thought … "I could do better than this." Or maybe, "This is exactly what I'm passionate about. I'd love to write for them." Or maybe, "Why don't they have a blog/newsletter/social media presence? They're missing a huge opportunity to attract new customers." It happens to me all the time. These days, I have to resist the urge to reach out and offer my services. But if you have time in your writing schedule … or you're just starting out and are looking to land your first paying clients … I want to help you take advantage of the opportunity whenever it appears! So, here's a little practice scenario … Let's say your ideal client is a veterinarian. You spend a Saturday afternoon researching vets in your area, and find varying degrees of blogs … Situation #1: Blog not being posted to regularly A blog with big gaps typically indicates someone who sees the value in having a blog, but doesn't have the time to maintain it. Your job: take it off their hands. Here's how to set up the conversation … "Veterinarian Bob — I was on your website today and found your blog. I love the last article you posted about ABC, and it really helped me understand XYZ. But, since it hasn't been posted on for a few months, your clients are missing out on great answers and solutions to help their pets. "Regular posts will help your clients stay engaged with you and your services, too. I'd love to write them for you. I have five ideas I'd like to start with … Can I send the list over?" Situation #2: Great blog content Many writers will shy away from this opportunity. The client already has great content! What can I do for them? Answer: offer more of it. As I mentioned, keeping up a quality blog takes time and effort. And most importantly, new ideas. But this potential client VALUES their blog enough to put in the effort. Which means they'll value a good writer, too. With this one, you'll want to spend time brainstorming some problems and solutions they're not yet covering. Or different angles on the ones they are frequently writing about. "Veterinarian Bob, I've looked at your website and see that your blog is targeting pet owners with solutions to their pets' problems. I have five ideas of blog posts I'd like to write for you … that will touch on some of the hot buttons I see as missed opportunities. Can I send them over?" Situation #3: No blog Interestingly, this is the one most new writers would think to choose first. But it's actually a little trickier than the other two, because you may have to first sell the client on the benefits of having a blog. Luckily, with the boom in people researching solutions online, it's not a hard sell. "Veterinarian Bob, I've looked at your website and see you don't have a blog. Not only would a blog bring in more business from current patients, but it would also bring in new ones. Local search is a huge opportunity right now, and blogs are the best way to take full advantage. Pet owners are searching for answers and solutions to help their pets, and I'd love to write them for you. I have five ideas I'd like to start with … Can I send the list over?" In all three cases, you've set yourself up for success … - You've demonstrated your expertise … - You've led by offering insights … - And you've started a conversation that doesn't feel canned. Now all that's left to do is the writing! If you have our [blogging program](, you're all set. It gives you everything you need to crank out quick, effective blog posts (and gives you additional help landing clients too!). And, of course, the plan above works with lots of other writing projects, too … newsletters, social media, emails … You just saw how easy it can be to land that first client by simply observing what they're already doing … and then offering to help them out. This week, spend some time in your niche looking for opportunities … And find someone to reach out to! Don't worry if you don't hear back from every single attempt … just keep at it and be sure to keep us posted when they do. You have nothing to lose … and paid assignments to gain!
