– Oscar Wilde Hi {NAME}, Becoming a writer is kind of like changing schools … You get to totally reinvent yourself. Your "brand" can be anything you want it to be. And you can use it to attract your ideal clients … and create a writing business you truly enjoy. You'll never have to pretend to be something you're not … When I entered the publishing world 24 years ago, it was run by a bunch of old men. I worked hard to be "one of them." Imagine that for a second … A young, 20-something girl … trying to act like an old guy. ?!? But it wasn't the last time I'd pretend … With each career move I became what the job or company wanted me to be. I was a chameleon. And it was exhausting. Then I found AWAI. 🥰 Maturity probably played a small role … But being surrounded by so many talented people, of all walks of life, backgrounds, personalities, and SO many writing styles … I quickly learned there wasn't only one "right" way. Rather than trying to fit into what others wanted, I allowed myself to move towards what felt right … And quickly learned I would attract the assignments I wanted to write, products I believed in, and people I wanted to work with … simply by being me. As Ted shared in this week's [Monday Morning Jumpstart]( on finding your brand … it's worth spending some time thinking about. What do you want to be known for? When people refer you, what do you want them to say about you? What kinds of clients do you want to work with? I chose the word "with" for a reason by the way … writing is often a partnership, with both you and the client on the same team, aligned with the same goal. One more reason to be clear in who you are as a writer. What kinds of products and companies do you believe in? I get this question a lot from new writers …"what if I don't believe in the product?" My answer: Your copy will be so much stronger if you can write with genuine enthusiasm … believing the company and product you're writing for really does solve your reader's problem. And if you don't believe in it? Walk away. And finally, {NAME} … What makes you, you? You'll be much happier showing up to your writing career if you don't have to fake it day in and day out. If you're just starting out, or you've been working for a while and haven't done this exercise, spend some time this weekend thinking about the answers to these questions.
