Today The Times sends out over 50 email newsletters on specific interests ranging from news analysis … to sports … shopping … travel … real estate … love stories … cooking … book reviews … and more … with the ultimate goal of turning readers into paid subscribers. Brick-and-mortar businesses like salons, restaurants, physical therapists, and hotels are also doubling down on this powerful marketing tool … As are online businesses, like retailers, software companies, financial institutions, and more … to build relationships with their customers, and ultimately increase revenue. And whenever you, as a writer, can help a business grow its revenue, you know what that means … More money for you! To the tune of $800 to $2,000 a month in retainer fees. 😎 But what's even better about e-newsletters … And one of the main reasons why we created the [world's premier course in writing them]( … Is because they're a BLAST to write! For the most part, e-newsletters focus on building a brand's personality by covering interesting, non-salesy topics in a warm, conversational tone. For an especially fun example, check out Ben & Jerry's newsletter. They call it "Chunkmail." 😆 Issues share new flavors … tips on the best toppings you can add at home (caramel corn and basil whipped cream among them) … recipes … news … and "secrets" from ice cream shop "scoopers." Someone is getting paid to write that fun content! No matter where you are in your writing career, newsletters are worth considering … whether exclusively or in addition to other projects. If you already have a writing niche, start there. See what companies are doing with newsletters, and start making notes about what you like, what you don't, and other ideas you have for content. If you don't have a niche, yet … start with a topic you're genuinely interested in. (Which happens to be a great way to choose a writing niche!) You can also look for newsletters from professional service providers in your area … dentists, accountants, chiropractors … both the ones you use AND their competitors. Or you can look for newsletters from your favorite stores and activities … and companies and services that you already use. Like ice cream. 😜 You can even Google a topic that you like and "newsletters." For example, "wellness newsletters," "travel newsletters," "cooking newsletters," etc. Finding something you genuinely love to read makes for easy research! As you're reading, you'll find that, while companies can sell products or services directly from their e-newsletter … Selling isn't the point, here. The main focus is on building a relationship with the reader — whether that's someone who just discovered the company and wants to know more about it … or a life-long customer.
