It’s really mind blowing when you dig in [The Writer’ s Life]( April 13, 2022 "Know the rules well, so you can break them effectively." – Dalai Lama Hi {NAME}, "I charge $100 an hour." That's what the tennis instructor told my husband after he asked about a private lesson for our son to show him the basics. Seems like a decent gig … time spent in the great outdoors, day after day, doing what he loves. A child athlete turned instructor, he started getting paid when he was 16 … assisting professional instructors training new talent. Being a writer I'm overly curious … so I asked for more … He said he tried to leave tennis in his 30's after getting his master's degree. But returned to the sport because he loves teaching. Today, at 41, his passion lies with training kids … and having seen him in action I can attest, he's REALLY good at what he does. But this is where my logical brain kicks into overdrive … it's a curse, {NAME}! While I 100% admire people who pursue their passions, I can't help but evaluate everything through the eyes of someone who knows firsthand how much money writers make. I told you, it's a curse. After 25 years of work (not to mention the years and money invested in his training by his parents), he's worked his way up to $100 an hour. Now IF he can book 40 private lessons a week, AND he is willing to work 52 weeks a year … he'll make $208,000 a year. But with tennis relying on weather (rain and freezing temps make it impossible to play), I'm guessing this is an impossible feat. And every day it rains, or he decides to take vacation, he loses $800 of his daily earning potential. Every … single … day. (And, that's not to mention lost income due to potential injuries and last minute cancellations by his students.) Ready for a rabbit hole? You can Google the average salary for any profession and divide it by 1,920 to get the hourly rate for someone working 40 hours a week … taking 4 weeks of vacation. Warning: I just spent probably a good 20 minutes doing this. It's exciting (for writers) and depressing at the same time … I found out a pediatrician in Texas makes, on average, $127 an hour. Which kills me because our pediatrician has helped us through more scary situations than I ever care to relive, starting at birth for both of my kiddos. But wait, there's more … This doesn't even take into consideration the time it takes to start getting paid in the profession … Sure, writers aren't hitting their highest earning potential on day one. They'll make more money over time as they add more skills and gain more experience. But even if you have zero experience, you can start making decent money in a few months. Take [Steve Slaunwhite's upcoming mentorship]( for example … He'll have you up and running, with experience, samples, and help finding clients, in just 9 weeks. You'll be a professional B2B copywriter, capable of hitting six-figures within two years. (Past students have done it faster, but two years is expected.) But going back to my analysis … There's ALSO the price of a degree — in any profession. The average cost of a 4-year degree at a public school is roughly $40K these days for in state, and $100K for out of state. It's not surprising college kids like Lynelle Suan are jumping ship for copywriting … And making more money NOW than they would expect with their degree four years later. ([You can read her story here.]() Don't get me wrong … I believe in having an education. You need to invest in yourself, you need to learn financially valuable skills, and as a writer, you need ideas … which comes from learning and thinking. And I believe in doing something you're passionate about. If I've learned anything in my career, it's that enthusiasm is the best driver for success. But if you're at a crossroads right now … Wondering if you should pursue writing, even though you've invested all that time and money in your current career … It's certainly worth considering. Remember, you can leverage all that experience into a writing career too. Staying in an industry you're familiar with is one of the easiest and fastest ways to make great money as a writer. It's also why the B2B niche is so popular among new writers. You have an automatic "leg up" on day one! But even that tennis instructor … If he wrote the tennis club's monthly newsletter, weekly emails, and managed the Facebook group, he'd be making an additional $2,600 (on the very low end of the [pricing scale]() every month. That's worth 26 hours of private lessons during those same 30 days. 🤯 And I bet the Club would have a lot more members, too. #winwin [Rebecca Matter’ s signature] Rebecca What's Hot at AWAI … 👉 If you missed yesterday's B2B Copywriting Webinar – [catch the replay here](! 💰 [Here are Today's 7 Top-Paying Gigs in B2B Writing](. 🤓 [3 Proven Copywriting Formulas You Don't Know (But Should!)]( 🤔 Curious about the best niches for B2B writing?
