Your writing clients will never want to let you go [The Writer’ s Life](
April 6, 2022 "Begin with the end in mind."
– Stephen Covey Hi {NAME}, One of my goals in business is to always look for the win/win … It feels right when both parties come together to create a mutually beneficial solution. Even in my most challenging negotiations, I stay focused on both parties gaining. It's why I love retainers so much. Because the writer wins. AND the client wins. In fact, {NAME}, with a retainer, YOU win on many fronts … Perhaps the most obvious is … Win #1: The ability to forecast your writing income. You get the perks of a monthly paycheck, plus the freedom of a freelancer. 💃 🎉 But that's just the beginning … Win #2: Knowing you have the bills covered gives you peace of mind. It might sound similar to the first win … but freeing up your brain from having to think about money will allow you to focus on your writing … ultimately improving your output, increasing your output, and making you more efficient … Which leads to … Win #3: Your "per hour" rate increases over time. The more projects you knock out as a writer, the faster you get. It's inevitable. The muscles form, and you unknowingly (or intentionally!) develop systems for approaching projects. And the more you continue to work with any one client (which is built in because of the retainer), the faster you'll get, too … You'll know their voice, style, internal procedures. It will get easier and easier for you to turn around great copy or content. But your rate won't go down. Since you're on a retainer — you get paid the same each month. You'll just spend less time doing each project … Which means you could take on more client work ($$$) … Or take that time to enjoy life! (Ha – A win/win within a win!) Now, because you know your client so well at this point, and what's working for them, that brings us to … Win #4: Your copy improves. And better results for your client = a better track record for you. That makes four wins for you so far … and we're not even done! We haven't even touched on the time you save by NOT having to market your services to find new clients (win #5) … The increase in referrals you get because of your awesome writing and reliability (win #6) … And the increased value to your clients that makes it easier for you to raise your fees — and harder for them to ever let you go (wins #7 and #8). WHEW! Not let's look at the client's side of this win/win … Thanks to the retainer, they save time every month by not having to recruit, hire, and train new writers. They also save time because of your intel with how they work, their style, their needs, and so on. They then get better copy over time … which moves the key metrics they look at like leads, conversion rates, retention rates and more. And the biggest win of all for clients: better results! Which means more money straight to the bottom line. So, what's the best retainer, where everyone gets to win all. The. Time? It really depends on you, {NAME} … Many projects lend themselves perfectly to retainers. We covered four in [yesterday's Inside AWAI](. But the one project type that really pushes on all of these wins — on both sides — is email writing. Email writers are the rainmakers … A client can have the best promo, product, customer experience, you name it. But something has to drive people to all of it … And that driver is email. Emails are used at every point of the customer journey … - Onboarding new prospects
- Building relationships
- Selling
- Ensuring customers remain happy
- And selling some more They're the glue of all effective marketing campaigns. And for you, the writer, they're a cash cow! Because if a company wants more customers, more sales, more anything … the answer is: send more emails. Which means you can write your own ticket. I usually hate that cliché … But in this case, it's pretty darn true. One more email will always increase response. The more you offer to write, the more the client makes, and the more you can charge. (Another win/win! 🥳 ) To learn more about how to get into email writing, I recommend you check out our upcoming Certification taught by the best email writer I know — Guillermo Rubio, also known around AWAI as "G." When I first met G, he was a barista and ballroom dance instructor. He bought our copywriting program and was determined to make it as a six-figure sales letter writer. He succeeded. And then realized he could make just as much money writing emails, which is where most of his time is spent today. He's so good at it that we hold everyone up to HIS standard. We even hired him to coach all of our in-house writers and pay him a big retainer every single month. #win/win If you're looking to make money writing emails, he's the guy to learn from. Even if you aren't ready for a certification, I recommend you [read his letter](. Just giving it a read will give you intel you can use to shape your own writing career.
