How to make money writing without one [The Writerβ s Life](

β Ralph Waldo Emerson Hi {NAME}, Choosing a niche is one of the roadblocks most writers face early on. In fact, many excellent writers are losing out on potential paychecks right this minute β¦ Because they're paralyzed by the idea that you need to make sure you're in the "right niche" before you start. And as someone whose job it is to help you land your first clients, give you momentum, help you make money, and keep pushing you forward β¦ Let me remove that roadblock today. π First of all though, niching does have its benefits β¦ It makes it easier to identify potential clients β¦ You can market yourself as a specialist in their niche, which means their perception of your expertise and worth are immediately influenced in your favor β¦ And it gives you speed when working on projects. You know the prospect. Understand the problems and solutions. And everything you read and write fuels your tank for the next project. But if the mere idea of choosing a niche stops you, then try this β¦ Don't! π Don't choose a niche. I know plenty of happy, successful writers with full schedules who take on any project they find interesting β niche be darned! However β¦ many of them DO specialize in a type of writing. For example, you may choose to do something like: - SEO strategy β Optimizing content on websites for certain key phrases β¦
- Site Auditing β Finding the "missing pieces" in a client's current content strategy β¦
- User Experience (UX) β Improving the reader's experience with copy and content delivered during the customer journey. Like niches, there are a lot of project types you could specialize in. But rather than give you TOO MANY CHOICES β¦ Let's talk about the ONE that has high value to all companies, is in big demand, and can be performed in any industry. (ANY industry.) If I were starting out today, I'd choose to specialize in [UX Copywriting](. As a UX copywriter, you get to look at the copy in a company's website and in their ads and emails β¦ approach it from the perspective of the customer β¦ and tell them how to tweak the copy so that it gives the reader a better experience overall. And you'd do the same thing when writing new copy, too. Businesses in every niche hire UX copywriters to write landing pages, homepages, emails, product descriptions, order devices, and more. And you can charge more for projects β¦ Since you'll be bringing your special power to attract and retain potential customers that every business needs. In fact, according to ZipRecruiter, the average pay for a staff UX writer in the US is $92,888 β the highest pay of all copywriters. And I happen to know one who's making well above that β without ever choosing a niche! Our very own UX copywriting expert, Heather Robson, has been a copywriter for over 20 years. She makes great money as a writer. She had the time and energy to homeschool her kids β¦ work on her fantasy writing β¦ and take on paid gigs writing about anything, because she has never committed to a single niche. In the beginning, she felt like she should choose one β¦ and even tried a few times. But whenever she chose something, it just felt wrong. She told me it "felt like I had put myself in a box that was too restrictive." Certainly not the freedom we're aiming for as writers! Specializing in UX took that pressure away. Her UX skills allow her to charge more for her copy β¦ and still skip from one topic to another. In the past year alone, she's written about emerging technologies like A.I. and virtual reality β¦ medicinal and culinary mushrooms β¦ HVAC β¦ digital marketing and business-building β¦ and more! So, all of that to say β¦ Choose a niche β¦ or choose a specialty β¦ it's kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure story. Except in this case β¦ Whether you pick a niche and dive in β¦ Or you write about a wide variety of topics for your entire career, like Heather β¦ There are no wrong choices!
