By Melynda Boyce [Daniel Rios Headshot]
Daniel Rios "PWA helped me realize — and gave me the confidence — that a writing career could be something real for me, and helped me take my first sure steps," notes Daniel Rios. The former "beginner" is currently the Direct-Response Marketing Manager at CEM Benchmarking, an independent investment benchmarking company serving more than 350 blue-chip corporate partners and governments worldwide. Daniel began his career in Venezuela, working in finance, and later ran his own import/export business. When he immigrated to Canada a little over eight years ago, he became interested in the world of direct-response, finding AWAI and The Professional Writers' Alliance. As he improved his writing skills and began working with clients, Daniel was surprised to find that while writers may be great with words, they often fail to speak the language of business. By not truly understanding the full value of their work in the overall business process, many writers were offering up their hard work for far less than they deserved. Daniel got serious about mastering "marketer math" and connecting the dots between his writing and the profitability of a business. Being able to show clients how his copywriting directly impacted the bottom line earned him larger contract and more loyal clients. For example, he was able to transform an offer for an $18/hour remote assistant position into a $12,000 copy contract. By demonstrating how his copy could lead to a massive increase in sales for his client, simple "marketer math" made it easy for her to say, "How soon can we get started?" Yet Daniel — appreciating all he'd learned from PWA and others on his way up — wanted to share his knowledge and help others land bigger, better deals. Over the summer of 2020, he built a customized "crash course" on marketer math for the PWA community. He included example scenarios, practice conversations, and other tools to help even the newest PWA member use his tactics to win new business and unlock bigger contracts. Members loved the extra insights and several noted that they were already seeing a difference in their client interactions by using his tips. Now — together with a follow-up interview on the same topic — Daniel's guide lives in the PWA community archives, available to any member who needs it at any time. For a limited time, you can join PWA for $1 AND get access to a 21-Day Client Challenge (regularly $497) starting in January for no extra cost.
