And why it’s not always bad! May 27, 2024 [The Writer’ s Life]( "Everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear." — George Addair Let's make today a great start to your week, {NAME}! Guillermo Rubio here — taking over The Writer's Life today. I've been a working copywriter for 17 years (and counting). And if there's one thing I've had to deal with at every stage of my career, it's that four-letter word … the one we all try to avoid: F-E-A-R. Whether it's the fear of rejection, the fear of embarrassment, the fear of failing, or even the fear of succeeding (gasp!) … This one single emotion can often hold us back from pursuing our dreams and reaching our full potential. But here's the thing: I've found through experience that almost everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear. Just think back to every good thing or big goal you've achieved in your life. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts you had to get over an initial fear first — before you got to experience the rewards. It's no different with copywriting. Fear WILL rear its head (I can attest to that — I've got the T-shirt!). - When it's time to go and land your first client ever — FEAR. - When it comes to quoting a price you really feel you deserve (and is higher than anything you've ever charged before) — FEAR. - When it comes to having a client or copy chief review your copy for the first time — FEAR. - When it comes to landing a HUGE project, and then wondering if you're just an impostor who's not really cut out for this — FEAR. My point is, fear's going to be there, whether you like it or not. Which means you have two choices: - Let it keep you stuck, do nothing to push past it, and keep setting the same goals year after year (you know, goals like "THIS is the year I'll achieve my goal of becoming a paid writer!"). - Thank your fear for trying to keep you safe, courteously give it the middle finger, and commit to not letting it stop you by moving forward despite it being there. Choose option 2, and you'll most likely get what you're after. This is especially true in the world we find ourselves in right now. There is a lot to fear "out there." The best thing you can do is focus on what you can control — your behavior. That means taking action in spite of fear. That's why you NEED to [watch today's Monday Morning Jumpstart](. You'll get tips and strategies on how to face your fears as a writer head-on. Make sure you watch it. It gets in our way. I'm not talking about BIG SCARY monster fears, like finding yourself on the run from a Tyrannosaurus rex in a Jurassic Park–style experience. No, I'm talking about those everyday fears that hold us back. You know the ones. The self-doubt. The "what if it's not any good" thoughts. The ones that keep us from pursuing our dreams. I recently read Twyla Tharp's book The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life and want to share some of the inspiration from it with you. [Continue reading here.]( TODAY! He was a barista at Starbucks, a dance instructor, and working at a hotel. Like many, he struggled to make ends meet and find meaningful, fulfilling work. More than five years had passed since Guillermo had received a letter from American Writers & Artists Institute (AWAI) that outlined how others like him were making a good — even great — living as direct-response copywriters. Despite the fact that he had no prior writing experience, Guillermo invested in AWAI's Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting. "I decided it was high time I did something with the course I'd bought years ago," Guillermo said. Today, Guillermo has a flourishing copywriting business and a solid income while enjoying the freedom of being his own boss. But to get here, he had to learn more than copywriting skills; he had to overcome a major obstacle: fear. [Read the rest of his story here.]( FREE LIVE EVENT! GAMECHANGERS!
