[What's On Tonight: Syfy takes a stab at horror anthologies with a new series]
Oct 11, 2016 12:00 am
Hereâs whatâs up in the world of TV for Tuesday, October 11. All times are Eastern.
Top picks
[Channel Zero: Candle Cove] (Syfy, 9 p.m.): Weâre just 20 days from Halloween, so expect a lot of spooky recommendations (and the odd scary name-pun here and there) in the upcoming Tuesday editions of Whatâs On Tonight. First up is Syfyâs horror nutso-looking anthology series, Channel Zero. Taking a note from [American Horror Story], each season will focus on a different arc, with the first six episodes adapting Kris Straubâs [creepypasta], Candle Cove. We know what youâre thinking, and no, Kris Straub isnât related to horror novelist Peter Straub. Letâs hope [Emily âHellâ Stephens] knows that before diving in for a pre-air review.
Black Market: Dispatches (Viceland, 10 p.m.): On the latest episode of Vicelandâs breakout series, the real-life subjects have to deal with horrors that are much more realistic and sobering. This installment, called âVietnamâs Transgender Underground,â focuses on that countryâs ostracized trans community, shunned to the point where they have to resort to illegal hormone and cosmetic treatments. [Michael K. Williams] hosts.
Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove (Discovery, 9 p.m.): Ensuring Channel Zero doesnât corner the market on shows with âcoveâ in their subtitle, [Deadliest Catch] continues their season-long focus on families of fishermen along the tumultuous stretch of ocean dubbed the Graveyard Of The Pacific. Peril and fishing villages, eh? [Sounds familiar].
Premieres and finales
[Fresh Off The Boat] (ABC, 9 p.m.): When viewers [last] checked in with the Huangs, they were on the way to their native Taiwan so Louis could make up with his brother, Gene (Ken Jeong), and attend his wedding. Although ABC missed the opportunity for a FOTB/Dr. Ken crossover, the season-three premiere is still exciting for its new location. This is the first time an American show has been filmed in the capital city of Taipei, which also makes it the first time an American critic (Dan Caf-âfreakâ) has done a drop-in review on one.
[The Real OâNeals] (ABC, 9:30 p.m.): It seems ABC was able to recover from the minor bit of [controversy]surrounding its [Dan Savage]-produced sitcom, and itâs back for a full second season. That means The A.V. Club will be posting regular reviews from [Ashley âSlayâ-Harris]. It looks like this first episode centers around Kennyâs attempts to start the first LGBT club at school in honor of National Coming Out Day.
[Halt And Catch Fire] (AMC, 10:01 p.m.): [Last week] Dennis [âPurrâ-kins] (as in a spooky black cat) noted how the penultimate evening of Halt And Catch Fireâs third season, in many ways, felt like a proper ending. So who knows what will be in store for the two-part finale? And, in keeping with the grimness of last weekâs episode, this may be the final night of new Halt And Catch installments ever (depending on ratings), thus making it a must-watch for fans of the series. Keep those fingers crossed for a renewal. With a little bit of luck, maybe the show can get around to weaving the dawn of social media into the story.
Regular coverage
[Brooklyn Nine-Nine] (Fox, 8 p.m.)
[The Flash] (The CW, 8 p.m.)
[WWE SmackDown! Live] (USA, 8 p.m.)
[New Girl] (Fox, 8:30 p.m.)
[Marvelâs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.] (ABC, 10 p.m.)
[Atlanta] (FX, 10 p.m.)
[Drunk History] (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.)
[The Mindy Project] (Hulu)
Streaming pick
[Hush] ([Netflix]): The only thing that could make this yearâs Stephen King-approved SXSW hit any better would be playing the song âHushâ over the end credits. But another horror movie [already did that]. No matter. Hush is a lot better than [I Know What You Did Last Summer]. Trust us.
