[View this email in your browser]( Statement on Former President Trump's Conviction BRONX NY (May 30, 2024) -- Today, Americans understand their responsibility to our country’s democracy and today a jury of 12 private individuals signaled to every citizen, and the world, that no one is above the law, including a former president. Justice prevails when democracy rises. When democracy rises, equity spreads across our culturally diverse city and rural neighborhoods and towering cities, guiding a nation founded on the principle of governance by the common person, not a monarch, to fulfill the sacred ideals of democracy. You cannot hush the will of the people when we stand against those who usurp our democracy and exploit it for personal gain. Democracy is susceptible to propaganda, but we must not abandon those who fall into its traps. To combat misinformation and lies corroding our democracy, we must unite at the ballot box and draw upon the collective authority of the American people to remove the threat of a candidate unencumbered by morals or values, which poisons our notions of democracy. We must listen to the better angels of our nature, preserve our democracy, and speak truth to power. Let us thank the jurors, Judge Merchen and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. All have been exposed to deadly threats, harassment and unbridled rage, they represented the dedicated, resolute, and immeasurable integrity our judicial system needs to thrive and protect the most vulnerable from those willing to exploit their power.
