CONBUDâs Lower East Side location is led by Coss Marte, a reformed drug dealer who gained fame for creating Conbody, a âprison-styleâ boot camp run and taught by formerly incarcerated people. Marte founded CONBUD with two other former inmates-turned-entrepreneurs, Alfredo Angueira and Junior Martinez. Angueira and Martinez run the Hoodspitality Group, which includes BEATSTRO, Bronx Drafthouse, Bodega Social and Bricks & Hops. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurants partnered with World Central Kitchen to provide thousands of meals. They continue their public service by feeding migrants across the city. CONBUDâs new Bronx location is run by Michael Montas, cofounder of Bronx cannabis company Summit Canna. The two companies have formed a partnership in which Summit Canna will operate under the CONBUD banner. Like Marte, Angueira and Martinez, Montas is a formerly incarcerated entrepreneur. âI went from being arrested as a kid in Castle Hill for Marijuana to now being an Owner in the South Bronx for selling Cannabis. CONBUD The Bronx is giving hope back to our people who for too long had opportunities taken away,â Montas said. Marte, Angueira and Martinez opened CONBUD because, as entrepreneurs of color, they have experienced New Yorkâs criminal justice system firsthand. The men know all too well the toll that a marijuana conviction can have on a personâs life. During the War on Drugs, about 85% of New Yorkâs prison population was Black and Latino, according to company officials. About 75% of those people came from just seven neighborhoods in New York City. Marte, Angueira and Martinez grew up in three of those neighborhoods. CONBUD The Bronx is anticipated to have a huge impact on its employees and the communities that were a hotspot for needless arrests during that time. âThe South Bronx, a place where, for decades, African American and Latino communities were arrested for selling marijuana, will now have Black and Brown men as owners, legally selling and hiring formerly incarcerated residents,â said by Junior Martinez and Alfredo Angueira. âFor this community, regularly considered the poorest Congressional district in America, it will have transformational and positive economic benefit and social impact.â A portion of CONBUD The Bronxâs profits will go toward nonprofit causes in the neighborhood.âAt CONBUD, every purchase is a step towards redemption and community empowerment,â said Martinez and Angueira. âWeâre here to change the narrative, one bud at a time.â May 1 Marina Jenkins National Redistricting Committee May 8 Sam Cornale Democratic National Committee Save the Dates April 26
