George Takei knows that AAPI hate is still here

{NAME}, George Takei, the “Star Trek” actor turned civil rights activist, recently reflected on his days spent in a Japanese internment camp: “Asian American hate is as old as American history and overnight, this country was swept up by suspicion and fear and naked, outright hatred. We had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor. There was no charge. Other than looking like this.” History is repeating itself. After seven months of Trump and the GOP fueling fears of the “China Virus'' and the “Kung-Flu,” 1 in 4 Asian Americans now report having experienced anti-Asian hate. After President Trump first tweeted his racist rebranding of COVID-19, there was an 800 percent increase in AAPI bias among conservative media outlets alone. Democrats are united in the fight against rampant AAPI hate attacks, condemning this racism tied to the pandemic in a September House vote. But the GOP overwhelmingly rejected this measure -- claiming it was “woke culture on steroids.” They know this fear will drive their base to the polls.
