Originally, Chicken McNuggets were sold in packs of 6, 9, and 20 pieces. An AoPS student might ask: "what numbers of Chicken McNuggets can you buy?" and "what is the largest number you can’t buy?" While these questions sound a little silly, they are examples from a very deep area of mathematics. The set of numbers of McNuggets you can buy is an example of a numerical monoid, and the largest number you can’t buy is called the Frobenius Number. For this year's CrowdMath project, we'll work together to tackle research problems that generalize the idea of numerical monoids, and along the way we'll encounter topics like ideal theory and semigroup theory.
