In Ming Smith's interpretation above, the artist has found inspiration in Ma’at, the ancient Egyptian goddess of truth, justice, and balance. In Smith’s own words, “I thought a lot about how we need to keep balance in mind. It’s a principle from the old world that needs to remain intact.” The artist represents her goddess as a poised ostrich feather that is surrounded by a steely silver; a literal ‘balancing’ of the feather as well as a balancing of form and texture.
