I want the people in my pictures to stare back." — Nan Goldin 1 Born Nancy Goldin on September 12, 1953 in Washington, D.C., she began taking photographs as a teenager following the suicide of her older sister. 2 Her work serves as a visual autobiography documenting herself and those closest to her, especially in the LGBTQ community. 3 The artist’s aesthetic is frequently characterized by its intimacy and spontaneity, as well as her rich palette of color. 4 Her opus, “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” (1980–1986), is a 40-minute slideshow of 700 photographs set to music that chronicled her life in New York during the 1980s. 5 “For me it is not a detachment to take a picture. It's a way of touching somebody—it's a caress,” she said of her medium. “I think that you can actually give people access to their own soul.” 6 She has been a dedicated activist, notably founding the “Prescription Addiction Intervention Now” (P.A.I.N.) group to protest the Sackler family and their involvement in the American opioid crisis. 7 The artist has also been embraced by the fashion world, shooting advertising campaigns for couture houses such as Dior and Bottega Veneta.
