The 78th Golden Globe Awards will air on Feb. 28 after being pushed back by two months, and the coronavirus changed other aspects of the storied ceremony as well. Eligibility requirements were changed to be more friendly for streaming and to acknowledge that not only is it dangerous to see films in theaters, many theaters are closed. Now, instead of requiring films be screened in Los Angeles-area theaters, films going straight to streaming services can be contenders. And it should be no surprise that in a year streaming has surged, those services also dominated the Golden Globe nominations. "Mank," distributed by Netflix, has the most nominations with six, and "The Trial of the Chicago 7," another Netflix release, earned five nods. The other films nominated for best drama are "The Father," "Nomadland," and "Promising Young Woman." Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will once again host the Golden Globes, marking their fourth time hosting the awards—albeit their first time doing so in totally different locations. The show will be held mostly virtually, with Poehler emceeing from L.A. and Fey from New York City.It's expectedthat the winners will broadcast in from all over the world. It's the most radical departure from the normal show, which began in 1944 with dramas, comedies, and musicals all considered for Best Picture. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association separated the category in two in 1951: drama, and musical or comedy.
