Why I’m running for Attorney General

For the last five years, I’ve served in Congress, fighting for affordable health care, voting rights, criminal justice reform and more. But my public service began as a young lieutenant in the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq and receiving the Bronze Star. I’ve spent three decades as an attorney working to advocate for and protect the most vulnerable, and I served faithfully in the Maryland House of Delegates, as Lieutenant Governor before my time as in the United States Congress. And we’ve been able to get a lot done for the people of Maryland. I led the fight to repeal the death penalty and enact some of the toughest gun safety laws into action like universal background checks and a ban on assault rifles. I’ve voted every time to protect reproductive rights, expanded protections for victims of domestic violence, and took a lead role in battling the opioid epidemic and supporting our veterans. But there’s more work to do. Marylanders need an Attorney General who is a champion for progress on all the issues we care the most about - health care, voting rights, gun control, and criminal justice reform. We’ve received endorsements from leaders in Congress, labor unions, advocacy groups, and other elected officials and community leaders across Maryland.
