A truly bipartisan issue

{NAME}, I was glad to hear President Biden list boosting veteran services as a top priority in his State of the Union address last week. Improving the lives of our veterans is truly a bipartisan issue. Since Day One in Congress, getting a new health clinic for New Jersey veterans has been a top priority. The thousands of vets in our community deserve a world-class facility that can give them the care they need – affordably and close to home. I'm proud of our work to deliver a new clinic and am grateful for the positive impact it will have on our veterans and our community. Veteran suicide is a severe problem, but it is getting better. There were fewer veteran suicides in 2019 than in 2020, thanks to services like peer mental health support and additional funding for veteran crisis care. I led a bipartisan letter, signed by 113 members calling for increased mental health support. Because of that and more work, we secured $13.2 billion in additional mental health service funding. We have the momentum. We must continue this work so that all veterans can get the care they have earned. The hard truth is that about one-third of adult homeless people are veterans. In Congress, I've worked hard to pass legislation that ensures veterans have access to low-income housing and allowances based on cost of living needs. Everyone, especially veterans, deserve to have a roof over their heads. We secured $2.7 billion in additional funding for VA homeless assistance programs that are helping veterans across the country. Thanks to bipartisan efforts, the number of homeless veterans declined by 11% from 2020 to 2022. And in 2022 alone, we permanently housed 40,000 veterans. This is amazing, and I'm committed to getting the number of homeless veterans down to zero. Like President Biden, I believe our veterans deserve more than the bare minimum. I am committed to job training and workforce development programs for veterans and their families. Veterans deserve to live with dignity. I'm proud to have sponsored legislation providing veterans with career training and apprenticeship opportunities. The work must continue as thousands of service members transition to civilian life every year. Improving the lives of veterans and their families is a worthy goal that everyone should get behind.
