{NAME}, Last weekend, I woke to a flurry of calls and texts after celebrating Lunar New Year with my family to learn of the mass shooting in California – where ten were killed at a Lunar New Year celebration like the one my family and I had attended. Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities around the nation planned festivities for Sunday and had been planning for months. Many in the community are now feeling shattered and scared. The common phrase I heard is, "I don't know how to process this." What does it mean that it happened on Lunar New Year? What does it mean that it was an elderly Asian American man who was the murderer? What do we do next to help communities feel safe? Many talked about how they grew up in Monterey Park, hung out there, or knew people there that they are now desperate to connect with and hope are safe. Then we got word of another shooting in Half Moon Bay, California. Then another in Iowa. Then Washington state. Then North Carolina. Over and over again. This violence is becoming normalized in our nation in a way we should never accept. I'm sad, angry, and grieving for the friends and family who lost someone. I cannot imagine how the communities suffering are coping after these mass shootings. Whether it is an AAPI community or any community, we stand in solidarity with them and will refuse to accept this violence as normal. [If you feel moved to help, please click here to donate to the families of the victims of the shooting in Monterey Park.]( Second, if you want to address the continued challenges facing the AAPI community, I am asking you to join me in supporting AAPI non-profit organizations that are dedicated to helping our community thrive. Here are a few suggestions: The Asian American Foundation provides funding and resources to build the infrastructure to improve AAPI advocacy, power, and representation. [Donate to TAAF here.]( Asian Americans Advancing Justice works to advance the civil and human rights of Asian Americans and to build and promote a fair and equitable society for all. [Donate to AAJC here.]( The National Council for Asian Pacific Americans serves to represent the interests of the greater Asian American (AA) and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (NHPI) communities and to provide a national voice for AA and NHPI issues. [Donate to NCAPA here.]( Finally, gun violence affects all of us. Here are some organizations working on efforts to keep our communities safe. Moms Demand Action is a grassroots organization started by a mother after the deadly Sandy Hook school shooting, fighting for public safety measures to end gun violence. [Donate to Moms Demand Action here.]( Giffords, an organization founded by a former Congresswoman and victim of gun violence, is committed to ending gun violence by working to elect gun safety champions. [Donate to Giffords here.]( Everytown is a gun violence prevention movement of Americans working to introduce evidence-based solutions in every town in America to end gun violence. [Donate to Everytown here.]( In the face of these tragedies, let us not lose hope. Let us continue to uplift each other. Andy Paid for by Andy Kim for Congress.
