Happy New Year from all of us at Ancient Origins! Every new year (and new day) provides us with another opportunity to do great things. Perhaps that’s part of why New Year’s resolutions are such a popular practice. But the idea of making (and breaking) New Year’s resolutions is nothing new, it’s a social phenomenon that’s existed for the past 4,000 years and can be traced back to ancient Babylon. At the beginning of each year, which fell on the first new moon following the vernal equinox (in March), the ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods to return objects they borrowed and to pay off their debts. This promise to their deities may have helped them to follow through with their resolutions because they believed that a kept promise would mean the gods would favor them and a broken promise would anger the gods, who would send unfortunate situations into their lives for the next 12 months. While we may not have the pressure to please the gods to motivate us, by setting our goals we’re tapping into an ancient and powerful longing for a fresh start with each new year. Whether you aim to return borrowed objects or to learn something new, why not make 2022 the best year you can? [Pollock Twins: Proof of Reincarnation?](
[A black and white photo of two peopleDescription automatically generated with low confidence](The Pollock twins were English girls who are often referenced as proof of reincarnation. Before the twins were born, their parents, Florence and John, had two other daughters, but the girls were killed in a car accident. Florence got pregnant the following year and gave birth to the twins. The twins seemed to “remember” the toys that had belonged to their elder sisters, and they pointed out landmarks their older sisters had known. They also began to panic upon seeing moving cars, shrieking, “The car is coming to get us!”| [READ MORE]( From archaeological anomalies to crimes, hoaxes, legends, folktales, eerie events, and the unexplained, [Historic Mysteries]( has something for every history fan out there! Food has shaped human evolution and we have shaped our environment and food. We transformed food from diet to cuisine, tied it to our cultural identities and heritage, and made it integral to our rituals, holidays, and traditions. By studying the history of food, our ancestors’ eating habits, and ancient cookbooks we discover more than just what people were eating – we also gain glimpses into life beyond the kitchen. In this issue Robyn E. Cutright, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Latin American Studies at Centre College, discusses her research on the ancient Andes to explain how past food choices influenced human evolution and traditional food practices. She also shares her perspectives on the Paleo diet, the difference between diet and cuisine, why recreating ancient recipes is cool, the most uncomfortable traditional food practice she’s experienced, and why everyone was baking bread in 2020. [Denisovan fossils look a bit unremarkable, but these bone fragments, mostly from animals, were perfect for Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectroscopy and DNA analysis, which were used in the recent study. Source: Samantha Brown / Nature Ecology & Evolution](Researchers have found new fossilized human-like remains mixed in an assortment of bone samples taken from Siberia’s famed Denisova Cave. This includes three fragments that belonged to actual Denisovans, the much-speculated-about species that gave the cave its name. These bones will be added to the growing collection of Denisovan fossils connected to the most intriguing of all the extinct human species, which lived on the Earth at the same time as Neanderthals and early modern humans yet left such a light footprint as to be virtually undetectable. | [READ MORE](
