You’ve likely heard this as an ancient Chinese curse, damning the recipient to ‘interesting’ (or chaotic, dangerous, or crazy) events in their lifetimes. It may surprise you that the phrase is apocryphal, and no ancient Chinese origins have ever been established. The English expression is more likely to have originated with the British statesman, Joseph Chamberlain, during a speech he gave in 1898: “I think that you will all agree that we are living in most interesting times. (Hear, hear.) I never remember myself a time in which our history was so full, in which day by day brought us new objects of interest, and, let me say also, new objects for anxiety. (Hear, hear.)” No matter the origins, the ‘curse’ has stuck around because it can handily describe any point in our human history! Rarely is the world still. But, no matter which ‘interesting times’ we live in, we’ve always managed to come out stronger, with lessons learned, and with renewed will to see better days. However ‘interesting’ the times were in 1898, or even in 2020, history shows that every new year gives us all the opportunity to do great things; to strive for happiness, peace, and wisdom.
