Deafening silence

{NAME}, When I heard the disparaging comments President Trump made about veterans and members of the armed forces, I was outraged. Calling Americans who lost their lives in the line of duty “suckers” and “losers” is appalling. Unfortunately, his words don’t surprise me, given how the president treated Senator John McCain. But what does surprise me is the deafening silence from Congressman Jeff Van Drew. Van Drew claims to support veterans and the military, but his actions speak louder than his words. He voted against expanding access to health care for veterans who lost insurance coverage due to the pandemic and against increasing disability benefits for wounded veterans. And now, he has failed to disavow the president’s comments. South Jersey’s veterans, active service members, and military families deserve so much better than this. We need elected leaders who treat our veterans and servicemembers with respect, and who will always fight for them in Congress.
