Translation: Our family will be eating very well. For the Chinese (and us Cantonese in particular), there are certain dishes we always cook. And we make those dishes because they resemble objects associated with good luck. We’ll make these bite-sized egg omelets because they look like gold bullion bars. Tofu cubes look like a plot of land, and eating tofu might yield a bountiful harvest. We’ll fry up sesame balls with the idea that money will “roll” into our household. If you choose to not believe any of these, that’s fine. The end result is still delicious food. And you can find many of those delicious recipes in my recently released book, [A Very Chinese Cookbook](. So what dishes should you cook to celebrate Lunar New Year? I have a few suggestions. - You can’t go wrong with [Lion’s Head Meatballs](. These fantastically tender-yet-springy pork meatballs are more comforting than a shawl blanket. - [Scallion Pancakes]( are crispy, chewy, savory wedges that are so fun to make and even more fun to eat. - How can a dish be simultaneously fiery and comforting? Our [Mapo Tofu]( is just that. Happy Lunar New Year, for those who celebrate. I hope this year makes you filthy rich. Kevin P.S.
