I envisioned myself with my two young sons, happily mixing, pouring, and kneading our way to culinary masterpieces. We probably wore matching aprons and had a smidge of flour on our noses. And like with many things in parenting, the reality played out much differently, and messily, than in my head. There was flour all right, but it wasn’t just on our noses. Tensions were high, ingredients were spilled, interest was lost, and while food was made, if I’m being honest, it felt like a lot more work than fun. But even as a survivor of early kid cooking mishaps, I’d still say it is worth it. December is the perfect month to spend some quality family time in the kitchen—there are at least a few days when no one needs to rush off to school, work, or sports, and turning on the oven feels like the perfect antidote to the frigid cold outside.
