Every year for the past 32 years my family’s home has been stacked with tins upon tins of cookies. Labeled, of course, for easy access. You’d think I’d be the family’s designated baker. I have a culinary degree, after all. Nope. It’s my dad. This time each year, the impressive spectacle begins. He’s in the kitchen mixing, rolling, and baking up to 15 varieties of cookies. The house smells of butter and sugar for three weeks straight. It’s like a candle shop. But without the headache. Or staying out of the way. Cookies are the quintessential holiday dessert. They’re shared amongst friends at cookie swaps. They’re drizzled with royal icing and decorations by kids and adults alike. They’re left out on Christmas Eve in case the man with the bag needs a little pick-me-up. My favorite part about my dad’s holiday cookies is the moment the platter, stacked to the nines, gets placed on the table. Everyone gathers. Conversation sparks. Laughter ensues. All while the cookies get devoured. It’s truly special. Whether you’re new to baking or a cookie connoisseur, my advice is this: Make memories. Because for me, they’re some of my fondest.
