Yes, you can do it safely—but you might not want to. [Read more about cooking stuffing inside the turkey. →]( Embrace the Decadent Pleasure of Lighthouse Inn Potatoes Cooked in cream, enriched with butter and Parmesan, and topped with buttery bread crumbs, this dish is a celebration of richness.[Find out how to make Lighthouse Inn Potatoes. →]( A Note From Our Test Cooks [Roasted Butternut Squash Salad with Za’atar and Parsley; Julia Collin Davison's Headshot]( How to Be the Best Thanksgiving Guest From Julia Collin Davison, Executive Editorial Director For the past few years, I’ve been a guest at my cousin’s house for Thanksgiving, but I never show up empty-handed. Besides having a few bottles of Pinot Noir and Sancerre tucked under my arm (my go-to [wines]( for Thanksgiving), I often bring an appetizer, a dessert, and some sort of side dish. The biggest help, however, is that I try to bring things that won’t require space in the oven, on the stovetop, or in the refrigerator. This means that I bring a [cooler]( with lots of ice (not to mention that extra ice is always good at a party) and sometimes pack a [toaster oven]( or even a [slow cooker]( if needed to finish my own dishes. Here are a few of my favorite recipes that are easy to make ahead and travel well: [Shrimp Cocktail →]( We’ve never shown up without bringing a big platter of shrimp cocktail—in fact, it’s expected of us now. The trick is to buy jumbo-size raw shrimp and cook them yourself in well-seasoned water. When buying shrimp (we like to buy them frozen), be sure to look at the label; there should be nothing in the ingredient list other than “shrimp.” If other ingredients are mentioned, such as preservatives, stay away; it’s a sign that the shrimp will have a rubbery texture and chemical aftertaste. [Make-Ahead Turkey Gravy →]( For instant rock-star status, at least in the eyes of the host, nothing beats bringing a quart of killer, homemade turkey gravy. Gravy is the one thing that cooks usually leave for the last minute and it tends to be very stressful. By bringing a pitcher of gravy, you not only ensure that there is plenty for everyone around the table, but you’ve also saved the host last-minute gravy-making anxiety. [Roasted Butternut Squash Salad with Za’atar and Parsley →]( The flavors in this Fall salad taste superb alongside roasted turkey, not to mention that the dish is a real looker. Plus, it can serve as a vegetarian option. [Fluffy Make-Ahead Dinner Rolls →]( Store-bought bread does not compare to the rich flavor and tender texture of these show-stopping rolls. They are a perfect addition to the holiday table and thanks to their make-ahead instructions, they’re easy to time just right. Also, they’re a favorite with the kids. [Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars →]( I like to add variety to the dessert table and bring things that are easy to cut into smaller pieces so that everyone can have a little taste. These cheesecake bars, flavored with canned pumpkin, are a crowd favorite, and the leftovers hold like a dream. [Pistachio-Spice Biscotti →]( I’m not a huge fan of dessert, but I love following up the big meal with a small cookie and a good cup of coffee (or Vin Santo). These homemade pistachio biscotti are the perfect thing to bring if you’re like me. Plus, putting a few in a nice bag with a handwritten note makes a wonderful gift for the host.
