Every day after school there was a list for me to complete before I did anything else. She would call from work to make sure that the line wasn’t busy (which in the ’90s meant that I was surfing the web). Sometimes my friends would help me with my list so that we could do what we wanted to do (talk to boys on AOL Instant Messenger) faster. Sometimes I’d make a 2-hour stink about something that would have taken me 20 minutes. One chore was to cook dinner on Tuesdays. I complained, but I secretly loved it. My signature recipe was brown rice and beans mixed with cheddar, soy sauce, and [Tabasco](. My family would ooh and aah and ask what was in it, and I’d say the truth plus a “secret ingredient.” In my head it was always love. I never told them, though. Talking emotions with parents? No way. But over the years, I’ve learned it’s best to say these things when you can. This weekend, let us honor all those who mother us. If you can, hug them. Tell them you love them. Thank them. Get their favorite flowers. Play their favorite music. Raise a glass to them. Tell a funny story. And my favorite: Make good food. I’m making our [Fluffy Dinner Rolls]( with [Herb Butter]( because my mother and I agree that rolls and butter are the best part of the meal. She loves salads, so I’ll do a [Fennel and Apple Salad with Smoked Mackerel]( and her favorite (dead-easy) [Flourless Chocolate Cake](. If you want to buy something for a mother in your life, as someone who handles a ton of products, my advice is to think of something that solves a very small problem for them—something that will make their life just a bit more pleasant. My mother cooks rice every Sunday (yes, my family still loves the stuff), and she has a complicated timer/note system to alert her (or whomever she’s delegated the task to) when the rice is done, so this year I got her an [Instant Pot]( for perfect [hands-off rice](. For the beach lover, maybe an insulated [wine tumbler]( A pretty (but rigorously tested) [salt keeper]( is always handy. Show them you care by putting them first, as mothers are known to do for everyone else. May we honor those who mother us today and every day. Love you, Mom!
