It’s also time to assess my kitchen gear and see what needs to be refreshed. I sharpen my [chef’s knife]( if I haven’t done it recently. A sharp blade means no slipping when I go to chop all those fresh vegetables that have started appearing in farmers’ markets after the long winter. The [Chef’sChoice Trizor XV]( electric sharpener is our winner, and it can give all my knives an overhaul in a few minutes. If it’s sunny, I open all the windows and run around my kitchen scrubbing down the counters and cabinets with [our favorite all-purpose spray cleaner]( (I did that testing, and love our winner), and use [Bar Keeper’s Friend]( a powerful powder, for super-deep cleaning, especially around the stove and sink. The liquid version of Bar Keeper’s Friend removes stains from my countertops without damaging them. I sweep and let [my robot mop]( scrub the floors. I also pull out my [wooden cutting boards]( [spoons]( and any wood-handled tools (like my [steak knives]( to give them a good drink. A coat of food-safe mineral oil (available at hardware stores) renews dried-out wood. It makes the finish look amazing and prevents cracking. I let the oil sit overnight to soak in, then wipe off any excess. This year, I’m making [spoon butter]( to help the refreshed, oiled surface last longer. It’s time to deep clean my [salad spinner]( too. I confess I usually do a cursory job most days. But our favorite [bottle brush]( is brilliant for soaping up and scrubbing every opening on the inner basket that holds the greens. (It also works wonders on the inside of my [Technivorm coffeemaker’s narrow-topped thermal carafe]( and [travel mugs](. With my kitchen refreshed, I’m ready for spring.
