I am not going to openly take sides on that debate, but however you feel, there are some key ways to up your sandwich (or hot dog) game. 1. Consider the bread. A lot of people go straight to sliced sandwich bread. And yes, that has a place, but it’s not always as perfect as soft, fluffy potato rolls or as bold as toasted rye bread. 2. Think about texture. Just meat and cheese on bread can be pretty one-note, but if you throw on some crispy fried onions, a creamy spread such as hummus, or some crunchy iceberg lettuce, you’re getting a new experience. 3. Use leftovers strategically. Did you cook a beef roast this past weekend? If you slice it thin, it will have more going on than store-bought roast beef. Some leftover Italian salad dressing? Cut a piece of baguette in half lengthwise and drizzle that salad dressing inside it before stuffing it with prosciutto, sliced mozzarella, and some tomatoes for a next-level sandwich. 4. Fresh herbs dress up a plain sandwich. If you’re making a turkey club, try it with some basil leaves. Making a ham and cheese? Throw on just a little minced tarragon (and maybe some mustard) to give it some elegance. If you need more inspiration, check out some of our favorite sandwich recipes.
