My mom was—and still is—really into holiday baking. She made batches and batches of cookies to give as gifts. My favorites were the “monster cookies,” which were basically huge chocolate chip cookies with pecans and walnuts. But then there were the Danish butter cookies that she learned how to make from her father, who was born in Denmark. And the gingerbread cookies that my little brother and I decorated together—in increasingly inappropriate ways as we entered our teen years. The jam thumbprints and the pecan sandies.
