[âRecipes that always, always work.â âThe New York Times](
Dear friend,
Welcome to fall, which Iâm welcoming with open arms and a garden full of vegetables. Here come all the memories of (followed closely by cravings for) hearty soups and stews and roasted and braised meats and fishâthe kind of recipes that make the house smell wonderful hours before supper. Weâll be spending time baking bread and pies and other project recipes because [the chill in the air brings a bit more energy and excitement to learn something new]( along with it. On my list right now? Sheet-Pan Chorizo, Corn, and Tomato Tostadas with Lime; Sweet Potato Salad with Cumin, Smoked Paprika, and Almonds; and Double-Chocolate Banana Bread.

I also find my thoughts turning to the holidays, which will be different this year . . . maybe a bit more adventurous in terms of what weâll cook and when (different recipes for smaller gatherings, lots of make-ahead options) and then thereâs the shopping. Our editors have begun assembling [buying guides for must-have and nice-to-have equipment and tools]( a little earlier than usual. What do we need, what would our family and friends love? The best recipes and equipment set everyone up for success every time. (Insider tip: Our ratings arm you with trusted instant intel on Prime Day.)

Have chicken, love lemon? This soup’s for you.
[Lemon Chicken and Orzo Soup](
Use fresh lemon juice, chives, and springs of thyme to create this bright dish from leftover chicken. Adding egg yolks thickens the soup and boosts richness. Perfect for chilly (and busy) fall evenings.

For the best flavor, keep your crowns out of the oven.
[Recipe Video: Skillet-Roasted Broccoli](
Easy prep: Crowns are cut into wedges so there are plenty of flat sides to sit flush with the skillet. Easy cooking: Once the water has evaporated and the broccoli is lightly steamed, the oil fills any gaps between the broccoli and the skillet for optimal heat transfer and browning.
[MEMBER COMMENT]
“I’ve made this several times and it has always turned out perfect. After making it the first time, the other person in the household said, âYou don't need to cook broccoli any other wayâthis is perfect.’”
— Aaron L.
[Recipe Variations]
Since sauces and vinaigrettes sogged out our favorite part of the broccoliâthe beautifully crisped tips of the floretsâwe concentrated on dry toppings. Parmesan and black pepper was a hit with tasters, as were two umami-rich options featuring crunchy, well-roasted seeds.
New, better, easier. Banana bread, the next generation.
[Banana Bread (with double chocolate variation!)](
We wanted a dead-simple recipe that was big on banana flavor and offered up tender, moist slices with just the right amount of sweetness. We started by adding more bananas than we thought possible, and then added more.
[MEMBER COMMENT]
“Ok, so I'm impressed. Tons of banana flavor! Crumb is moist and even. No nuts, no spices. Totally Bananarama! I'll be trying the chocolate variation soon!”
— Dean B.
[QUICK TIP]
DIY Overripe Bananas
No overripe bananas? Make your own by baking just-ripe, unpeeled yellow bananas in a 325-degree oven for 20 minutes, until they're entirely black. Be sure to let them cool completely before using them in this recipe.
