[Shop now →]( [Log In]( [America's Test Kitchen]( [find recipes]( [start free web trial]( Notes from Our Home Kitchens Dispatches from our cooks while we’re in our home kitchens instead of the Test Kitchen [Mystery Recipe Cook-Along. 3-27-2020]( At [America’s Test Kitchen Kids]( our goal is to build a new generation of empowered cooks, engaged eaters, and curious experimenters. We share our cooking (and science!) knowledge with kids of all ages through cookbooks, board and picture books, and the Young Chefs’ Club subscription box program. And now . . . we have a new podcast! [Mystery Recipe]( launched last month, bringing the fun, fantastical, and fascinating sides of a different ingredient to kids and their grown-ups every week—always at the crossroads of silly and educational. Each week has a theme—an ingredient—that will play a role in to the grand finale: a mystery recipe cook-along using all eight ingredients. New short, playful, and pun-tastic episodes drop Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Mystery Recipe is hosted by me (Molly Birnbaum, the editor in chief of America’s Test Kitchen Kids) and my sidekick, Mitsy the oven mitt (yes, you read that right!), along with a rotating group of young chefs. Each episode empowers kids to ask questions about their food and join their parents in the kitchen. We’re working to give your family a reason to get excited about cooking (and eating) together. We won’t give away too much (it is a MYSTERY recipe after all), but the first week of episodes is all about onions. [Listen along]( and then pair your new knowledge with this week’s onion-forward recipes! If you’re looking for other resources to help cook (and learn) with your kids at home, check out our website [ATKkids.com]( which is filled with kid-tested and kid-approved recipes, science experiments, and other recipes—now all free. [Jack’s Signature] Molly Birnbaum EDITOR IN CHIEF Inspired by Episode 1 of Onion Week: A Brilliant Bulb Chicken Tinga Tacos In the first episode of the season, our kid reporter Adelina gets a great scoop: an interview with an actual onion, out in the wild (aka a supermarket)! Adelina’s interview with Annie Allium gets at some of the struggles onions go through. “No one gives onions the attention that we deserve, you know?” says Annie. “We’re one of the most important parts of so many culinary masterpieces—the pastas, the stews, the gratins, the soups, the frittatas. But does anyone think “onion” when they eat? NO!” Put your new onion knowledge to work when you make our kid-tested and kid-approved recipe for [Chicken Tinga Tacos](. [view recipe]( Inspired by Episode 2 of Onion Week: All Layered Up Rigatoni with Beef and Onion Ragu In the second episode of the season, we peel back the layers of this special ingredient in an interview with onion farmer Aries Haygood. Our producer Chad asks Aries what his favorite part of being a farmer is. Aries responds: “My favorite part about being a farmer is planting the seed and watching that seed grow. And I get to watch that seed grow and develop. And then at the end of the season I get to take that seed, that is now an onion, and give it to other families. That their kids can eat and they can all sit around a table and they can talk and have fun and all while eating our sweet onions.” This recipe for Rigatoni with Beef and Onion Ragu uses 2.5 pounds of onions—ponder the farm they came from while chopping away! [view recipe]( Inspired by Episode 3 of Onion Week: For Crying Out Loud French Onion Soup In episode 3 of the season, Emma, a kid recipe tester, comes to us with a VERY pressing question: “I know that onions can make you cry when you chop them. But is there a way to stop that from happening? Like some kind of invention like an onion goggle?” You’ll want to know the answer (spoiler: we performed a science experiment in the Recipe Lab and goggles ARE your best bet) when making this silky, sweet French Onion Soup.
