On the weekends, I like to drive with my family to a farmers’ market in a neighboring town. My husband always goes overboard and buys way too much watermelon while I load up our cart with vegetables. We eat most of the watermelon ice cold from the fridge, but when we need to use up the excess fast, Lan Lam’s [Watermelon-Lime Agua Fresca]( is my go-to. Poured over lots of ice, it’s incredibly refreshing, with touches of agave, lime, and fresh mint, which grows in abundance in my backyard garden. [Fattoush (Pita Bread Salad with Tomatoes and Cucumber)]( combines summer’s bounty with one of my other favorite things–carbs. Juicy ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumber, and pieces of toasted pita are supplemented with arugula, scallions, cilantro, and mint and then dressed in a lemony, garlicky vinaigrette. As the salad sits, the pita develops a satisfying “crunchewy” texture that I can’t get enough of. With farm-fresh peppers, onions, garlic, and herbs available, July is also a great time for my friend Adam Ried’s [Eggs Pipérade](. Add a leafy salad and a loaf of bread, and this Basque dish makes a scrumptious, low-fuss summer dinner. Lastly, pie. In the offseason, I bake pie about once a month, but the frequency increases in summertime since fruit pies are my absolute favorite. Our [Blueberry Pie]( has a secret ingredient–a grated Granny Smith apple. It’s rich in pectin, so it helps lightly thicken the berry filling while adding a hint of tartness. Eat thick wedges of the pie while it’s warm, with melty scoops of vanilla ice cream, and then enjoy the leftovers for breakfast the next morning. Here’s to summer!
