Although America is breathing a sigh of relief, the chaos from this week’s partial shutdown threat is a reminder that the uncertainties that come with looming shutdowns—which are almost entirely unique to American government—[still harm the health of American democracy](. While avoiding a federal government shutdown is a good outcome, the chaos of constant shutdown threats, uncertainties about funding, and patchwork continuing resolutions are still detrimental to the government’s ability to provide services and to the health of American democracy.
