The conference [made news]( when Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) discussed [the introduction of the ARMAS Act]( which will help save lives by interrupting gun trafficking from the United States to other countries. Gun safety champions [Rep. Lucy McBath]( (D-GA) and [Rep. Maxwell Frost]( (D-FL) discussed their efforts to pass stronger gun laws and invest in prevention, while U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Director [Steve Dettelbach]( and representatives of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention reiterated President Joe Biden’s commitment to saving lives. Now more than ever, we must center the voices of survivors, especially young people affected by violence and survivors of color. In addition to these federal leaders, the conference heard from state and local advocates, students, doctors, [front-line community violence intervention workers]( and stakeholders from other social justice movements. [Learn More]( Don't Accept Gun Violence as the Status Quo Gun violence isn't normal, and we don't have to accept it as such. Advocates have been saying: We have the tools and strategies at our disposal to prevent these daily tragedies, but for too long, the federal government has drastically deprioritized proven community-based prevention and intervention programs. The [Break the Cycle of Violence Act]( would fund local programs that use proven strategies to reduce gun violence and help communities thrive. Communities that have invested in these interventions have seen reductions in gun homicides by as much as 60 percent, saving taxpayers [up to $41]( for each dollar spent. We can change the status quo. Tell Congress to put a down payment on safety now. [Act Now]( Inside the Success of the UAW Strike [An image of UAW President Shawn Fain greeting members at a UAW rally. ]( This fall, the United Auto Workers (UAW) reached a historic contract deal with the big three Detroit automakers following a six-week strike. Now, UAW President Shawn Fain is sharing more about how the deal came to fruition. In a new episode of the podcast “[Deconstructed]( Fain covers President Biden's support, the significance of his visit to the picket line, and the impact on negotiations. The conversation delves into the labor reform movements advocating for direct democracy and the challenges faced during the union's evolution. The interview explores the background of Fain's involvement in the union reform movement and his advocacy for working class issues. He describes his experience taking over the presidency in a short timeframe, preparing for the standup strike, and overcoming obstacles from the previous administration. He also explains the unique approach of the standup strike, targeting specific areas instead of a full walkout, emphasizing strategic flexibility and leverage. Fain also details the approach to engage both members and the public, which he says led to a significant increase in inquiries from workers expressing interest in joining the union.
