MAGA caucusâs first priority seems to be a government shutdown. Problems viewing this email? [View it in your browser]( [Center for American Progress]( InProgress from the Center for American Progress Stop the Shutdown Our government is [on the brink of shutdown](. If the government shuts down, it will be because Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and radical right-wing members of the House would rather push their own agenda than uphold their promise to pass the previously agreed upon budget. This government shutdown is both preventable and planned without interest in the government or the people. [Take Action to Stop the Government shutdown]( The effects of a shutdown are complicated. A shutdown would immediately halt certain programs and put other programs at risk if it lasted long enough. Some programs—such as Medicare, Social Security, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)—receive their appropriation outside the annual funding process, while others can turn to contingency funds that enable them to continue to make payments until funding is exhausted. That said, a government shutdown would halt many essential services that people rely on and put hundreds more services at risk. This doesn’t have to happen. Everyday programs that would be [immediately affected]( include: - Some preschool and school readiness centers would close, leading as many as 10,000 children losing their [Head Start benefits](.
- Most inspections of [drinking water facilities and hazardous waste sites]( that are led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would cease.
- [Workplace safety inspections]( made by the Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration (OSHA) would be limited, leading to some workers laboring in unsafe conditions.
- The U.S. Department of Justice would [postpone or curtail some of its civil litigation](.
- Some sick children may go without needed health care because the [National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center]( may need to turn patients away. A shutdown that lasted long enough could begin to put programs such as WIC, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) at risk, as well as jeopardize funding for school meals, child care, home energy assistance, and housing. The longer a shutdown lasts, the more programs are put at risk. Sign our letter to demand that the extreme right-wing in Congress avoids this catastrophe. [RSVP Today]( Progress in Action: Reducing Flooding in Pennsylvania [A large dam and a body of water]( Raystown Lake is a multi-purpose lake used for flood damage reduction, recreation, and natural resource opportunities, and hydropower. It is also the largest lake located entirely in Pennsylvania and receives between 1.2 and 1.5 million visits per year. Since the lake’s dam was constructed in 1973, it has played a key role in flood mitigation, preventing nearly $300 million in flooding damage. Yet many of the systems that help keep the Raystown Lake dam and spillway operating have not been updated since 1973. Now, thanks to a $20 million grant from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, these needed infrastructure repairs will be made. The dam cannot function properly without an efficient system, and this upgrade will help increase the efficiency of the infrastructure around the lake. Thanks to the Biden administration’s investments, more Pennsylvanians can live without fear of major flooding damage, and local residents, visitors, and the many animal species who call the lake home can enjoy the natural resources. Amid this tragedy, [CVI programs]( across the country have harnessed the strength and resilience of communities to take an active role in stopping violence before it happens. The Break the Cycle of Violence Act would provide $5 billion in community grants to CVI programs and $1.5 billion in workforce initiatives that are proven to reduce gun violence. Tell Congress: We need the Break the Cycle of Violence Act. [Take Action]( Automakers Must Provide Good Jobs and Lower Emissions [President Biden speaking at the UAW picket lines]( You’ve probably heard that President Joe Biden [visited]( striking auto workers on the picket line this week, after Detroit’s Big Three—Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis—failed to put forward contracts that do right by workers and support a just transition to electric vehicles. Despite skyrocketing profits, automakers are attempting to weaken proposed pollution standards and are opposing the better conditions that workers represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union are seeking. The truth is automakers do have the resources to support middle-class-led economic growth and clean up their vehicle fleets. Automakers can and must treat workers fairly and do their part to reduce pollution. It is critical that automakers’ “we can’t do it” refrain does not become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If it does, the livelihood of autoworkers, the strength of the economy, and the health of millions of Americans all stand to lose. Learn about the five reasons U.S. automakers need to step up on good jobs and expand the production of clean vehicles.
