Thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the bipartisan infrastructure law, $56 million will be used to update critical stations to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Until now, the only way to access some subway platforms was via stairs, but because of these improvements, older adults, those in wheelchairs, and parents with children in strollers will all be able to access the platforms with ease—empowering them to get where they want to go. This project comes as the nation marks the 33rd anniversary of the ADA. Improvements include elevators and lighting, installation, platform repairs, and overall station accessibility. The project will create well-paying local jobs and reduce reliance on cars, bolstering the local economy and protecting the future of our planet. These improvements will ensure all Philadelphians have access to sustainable public transportation for decades to come.
