STATEMENT: Supreme Court Far-Right Justices Make a Mockery of the Rule of Law, CAPâs Patrick Gaspard Says Yesterday, July 1, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that presidents are entitled to absolute or presumptive immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts that occurred during their time in the White House. As Justice Sonia Sotomayor [wrote]( in dissent, the majority opinion âreshapes the institution of the Presidency ⦠[and] makes a mockery of the principle ⦠that no man is above the law.â In response, [Patrick Gaspard]( president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement: Todayâs dangerous decision from the six extremists on the Supreme Court makes a mockery of the rule of law and will go down in history as one of the high courtâs most disastrous opinions. It turns presidents into kings, findingâfor the first time everâthat they enjoy sweeping immunity for their actions while in office. The court has now made it much harder to prosecute Donald Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. And it allows future presidents almost unlimited power to abuse their authority, including seemingly unfettered ability to weaponize the Department of Justice and direct the prosecution of political opponents. Although the court remanded the case back to the district court for further proceedings, it has clearly put its thumb on the scale for Donald Trump by dragging this decision out and insulating many of his criminal acts from prosecution. Now, more than ever, we need to impose term limits on justices who have run amok, for the good of this nation. While these financial actors profited greatly from their reckless risk-taking, everyday Americans ultimately bore the brunt of their greed. During the Great Recession, the United States experienced the most significant sustained [job losses]( since the Great Depression, and the [wealth gaps]( between the middle class and wealthy Americans widened. Today, extremists behind the far-right policy agenda â[Project 2025]( are laying the groundwork for another financial crisis. If enacted, policies included in Project 2025 would increase Wall Street profits by [overturning]( post-2008 crisis policies that were created to protect consumers, investors, and the stable functioning of financial markets. The policy changes would also severely limit regulatorsâ ability to step in during periods of instability. [A tweet from @NBACoalition reads "You can change a whole street. You can change a whole community. One block at a time. Philadelphia is one of the major U.S. cities thatâs seen the sharpest decline, with a 16 percent decrease in gun violence compared with the national drop of 13 percent. Last week, Philadelphia electeds and community leaders gathered for a [press conference]( to shine a light on CVI programs as a key driver behind this large reduction in gun violence. âFrom the data, we can see itâs clear that investing in neighborhood-based anti-violence and youth-related organizations is a fundamental part of the reduction in crime,â said state Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-PA) at the event. Despite these results, CVI programs are still severely underfunded, jeopardizing their long-term effectiveness and sustainability in communities. In partnership with the [Giffords Center to Prevent Gun Violence]( CAP has released a [new video]( to explain what exactly CVI is and how introducing and investing in these programs can produce beneficial changes such as those occurring in Philadelphia, improving overall public safety. [Watch Now]( ACT NOW: Letâs break the cycle of violence together Gun violence is not normal, and Americans do not need to accept it as such. We have the tools, strategies, and people to prevent daily tragedies resulting from this violence. But for too long, the federal government has dramatically underspent on proven community-based programs that address the root causes of gun violence, while spending billions in reactive interventions after harmful and fatal incidents have already occurred. Itâs time for a proactive approach. Tell Congress to pass the Break the Cycle of Violence Act now to provide federal grants for community violence intervention programs.
