STATEMENT: Guilty verdict holds Trump accountable for election interference Yesterday, May 30, a jury convicted former President Donald Trump of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. In response, [Patrick Gaspard]( president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement: This prosecution was about so much more than a hush money payment or falsified records. It was about former President Trumpâs repeated efforts to interfere in our free and fair elections. The jury saw through Trumpâs effort to hoodwink voters. Itâs a disturbing example of criminal behavior in which Trump will do anything for power, whether itâs paying people off to prevent voters from learning about his scandals or inciting an insurrection on January 6. Trump is a dangerous threat to democracy and this verdict shows how accountability can and must happen if our democracy is to survive. The rule of law triumphed here. Now, the legal system must move swiftly to pursue justice in the other cases against Trump. No one is above the law, not even a former president. Though this latest policy has drawn both strong praise and sharp critiques, this move is only one part of the administrationâs approach to protecting and building up American workers and businesses. [Overreliance on Chinese goods]( has made critical supply chains vulnerable to disruption and has hollowed out American manufacturing, the middle class, and communities. The United States must build more resilient and diversified supply chains that strengthen Americaâs long-term industrial competitiveness and deliver high-quality union jobs and opportunities for workers across the country. Aside from its strategic tariffs to ensure that American workers play a leading role in the production of the technologies that will define the future, the Biden administration has also taken many other worker-centric steps to make that a reality. Through initiatives such as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), enormous investments have been made to rebuild Americaâs manufacturing base and place the country at the forefront of the transition to clean, green technologies. The administration's strategic-tariffs-plus-investment approach has helped create more than 800,000 manufacturing jobs across industries and has laid a foundation for American competitiveness for generations. DACA has empowered them to live without fear of deportation, to work with dignity, and to pursue their dreams while making significant contributions to their local economies and the broader U.S. economy. Despite this, DACA remains under threat with a continuing [legal battle]( over its existence. And without a clear path to citizenship, DACA recipients will continue to live in a state of limbo. Itâs time for Congress to protect Dreamers and to pass the American Dream and Promise Act. Join us in demanding action today. (Getty/Marco Bello/AFP)]( Photo credit: Getty Images Direct pay clean energy tax credits, also known as elective pay, is yet another initiative set forth by the Biden administration that prioritizes our green future. States have a new opportunity to boost their clean energy economies through direct pay, a transformative policy from the IRA. This policy allows public and nonprofit organizations to access federal clean energy tax credits previously available only to private companies, offering significant discounts on projects they can own and build themselves. Direct pay empowers tax-exempt entities, including local governments and nonprofits, to benefit from clean energy's job creation and reduced energy costs and pollution. The IRA also increased the maximum credit for certain projects to 50 percent, or up to 70 percent or more for those in low-income and energy communities using American-made materials. State governments play a crucial role in implementing direct pay by providing bridge loans, technical assistance, and sponsoring their own projects. This leadership, combined with expanded federal incentives, can drive equitable clean energy deployment and help states achieve ambitious clean energy goals, ultimately paving the way to a 100 percent clean energy future.
