A recent breakthrough study in the Journal of Psychopharmacology revealed that a single dose of CBD can significantly increase blood flow to the hippocampus – the part of your brain associated with memory. For the controlled study, researchers at the University College London followed a group of adults who were not using any cannabis products. Over seven days, the volunteers were given either 600 mg of oral CBD or a placebo. One week later, researchers used an MRI brain scanning technique to measure blood flow to the hippocampus using a technique called arterial spin labeling that measures changes in the blood oxygen levels. This was the first study to find that CBD increases blood flow to key regions involved in memory processing, particularly the hippocampus in the prefrontal cortex. The study is too new to determine if CBD can directly influence your brain’s ability to retain and retrieve specific memories. But it’s not the first study that shows CBD has health benefits for dementia patients... Earlier research by the Salk Institute found evidence that CBD could help remove dementia from, and increase connections between, brain cells. There are three ways CBD works to improve the health of someone with dementia: - By reducing inflammation. A recent study has confirmed that inflammation is one of the chief contributors of Alzheimer’s. And these inflammatory changes can be detected 20 years before the onset of dementia.2 - By lowering oxygen buildup. Cerebral hypoxia – or not getting enough oxygen to the brain – greatly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.3 Reduced oxygen from a lower blood supply increases the protein beta-amyloid. - By acting as a brain stimulant and neuroprotectant. In animal studies, CBD increased the levels of glutamate. But it’s not the only brain-boosting herbs I recommend. Here are two more to try... - Rosemary. Studies prove that this culinary herb can improve memory and protect against Alzheimer’s and dementia by preventing the death of brain cells.5,6 You see, rosemary is a rich source of luteolin. And this powerful antioxidant protects a special kind of cell in your brain called “glial cells” from free radical damage and inflammation. But glial cells also remove toxic waste from the brain. I make rosemary tea by boiling water with two sprigs of fresh rosemary and a little lemon. But for maximum support, you need to supplement with 10 mg of luteolin daily. - Curcumin. This spice has incredibly powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. And research shows it works in the brain to dramatically boost cognitive function and memory in older adults. Researchers gave curcumin or a placebo to 40 adults ages 51 to 84 with mild memory problems. Those who took curcumin twice a day showed a remarkable 28% improvement in cognitive memory tests and improvements in mood.7 Those who didn’t take curcumin had no significant memory improvements. More importantly, brain scans of those who took curcumin showed almost no presence of amyloid and tau in the amygdala and hypothalamus. Those are two regions of your brain that control several important memory functions. Take 1,000 mg of curcumin a day. But make sure it contains piperine. This black pepper extract boosts your body’s absorption of curcumin.
