And grey matter controls your emotions. 15 Now most of the grey matter shrinkage happens in the pre-frontal cortex, located right behind your forehead. So it’s kind of ironic that you slap your forehead when you’ve forgotten something. And it makes sense that starting around 40, you start making lists, using sticky notes, and put your keys, wallet, or purse in the same place when you get home! Telomeres, DNA, and Chromosomes [Telomere] The genetic code that makes up your entire body is in your DNA. Think of DNA like it’s the specification manual on how you’re built. It determines everything about you from the color of the hair on top of your head to the size and shape of your little toe. And the information in your DNA is like a digital photograph. It can be reproduced many times and come out exactly the same. In reality, your DNA is a long thread of information twisted and packed into your chromosomes. There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in each of your cells. At the end of each pair of chromosomes is a protective tip, called a telomere. Telomeres are often compared to the plastic tips on shoelaces that keep them from unraveling. When you’re born, your average telomere length is 10,000 base pairs (bps). But by the time you’re around 20 years old, the average telomere length has shortened to about 8,000 bps. Your cells lose 35-150 bps every time they divide. And once your cells have less than 4,500 bps at the tip, your cells start to reproduce more like a photocopy that loses detail with each copy. With less than 4500 bps your cells have trouble reproducing exactly. The quality of each cellular reproduction deteriorates.
