The problem’s so widespread it’s become a global pandemic… Politico calls it… “The Great Nutrient Collapse” While Scientific American warns… “Because of soil depletion, crops grown decades ago were much richer in vitamins and minerals than the varieties most of us get today” In a recent study by the Cranfield Soil and Agrifood Institute, the first truly accurate assessment of the world’s soil lifespans was conducted… It looked at 4285 different locations across 38 countries… And found nearly 20% of modern farmland has less than 100 years left before its nutrient content hits zero… In comparison, 40% of natural farmland which is properly rested and cared for has over 10,000 years left…2 The evidence is overwhelming! [Minerals by year] Commercial farming has depleted the Earth’s soil nutrient levels so much that over the past years… The amount of nutrients in the world’s food supply has fallen by between 10 and 100 percent…3 Where Did Your Ancestors’ Nutrients Go? That’s right, over the last 70 years, the level of every nutrient in almost every kind of food has fallen between 10 and 100 percent. It’s an incredibly sobering fact. It means you now need to consume… - Twice as much meat, - Three times as much fruit, - And four to five times as many vegetables… To get the same amount of minerals and trace elements available in the same foods in 1940. In a landmark study by researchers from the University of Texas, the U.S. Department of Agriculture nutritional data from both 1950 and 1999 was compared for 43 different fruits and vegetables… And they found “reliable declines” in the amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and vitamin C over the past half-century. And the reason? The commercial agricultural practices are designed to improve the size, growth rate, and pest resistance. “The modern combination of intensive tilling, lack of cover crops, synthetic fertilizers, and pesticide use has left farmland stripped of the nutrients, minerals, and microbes that support healthy plant life.”The Guardian THE DECLINE OF THE WEST’S NUTRIENTS A Kushi Institute analysis of different nutrient data from 1975 to 1997 found the average levels of minerals in 12 fresh vegetables had fallen even further… The average calcium levels dropped 27 percent, iron levels 37 percent, vitamin A levels 21 percent, nd vitamin C levels 30 percent.1 In some cases, the decline in nutrients was almost double the rate… That’s more nutrients lost in these twenty-two years than in the fifty-one years from 1940-1991. A similar study of British nutrient data from 1930 to 1980, published in the British Food Journal, found that in 20 vegetables: The average calcium content had declined 19 percent, iron 22 percent, and potassium 14 percent.2 America, Australia, Britain… These declining rates clearly demonstrate the link between commercialized western agriculture and the damage it’s doing to food nutrient levels. --------------------------------------------------------------- References 1. But this isn’t limited to us Americans, it’s a global pandemic… A study published by the Australian Medical Research Council, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Fisheries and Foods, and the Food Standards Agency compared data available in 1940 with that in 1991… It showed a substantial loss in mineral and trace element content in every group of food investigated… --------------------------------------------------------------- The huge loss of minerals in meat and dairy is largely due to animals consuming plants and grains that are also minerally depleted… Their diet greatly affects the final nutrient content of our own food… After all, you are what you eat. In a recent study funded by the National Science Foundation, researchers looked at the role of fat in your diet… They found… "The amount of fat isn't as important as the ratio of specific fats in your diet.
