Texas lawmakers receive sobering lessons on hurricane housing money
Five southeast Texas lawmakers said Thursday they're distressed [the state has very little cash to bestow on Hurricane Harvey victims]( who have lost their homes.
Several also fretted that Hurricane Irma may cause huge damage when it hits the East Coast, slowing Texas' recovery by straining federal funds and federal agencies' manpower.
Two influential state representatives said Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp, the governor's new hurricane-rebuilding czar, must quickly finalize Texas' plans to provide temporary housing to storm victims and help homeowners rebuild.
"We know that federal funds aren't endless," said House Urban Affairs Committee Chairwoman Carol Alvarado, D-Houston. "Time is not on our side in light of the fact we have another major hurricane that will be hitting U.S. territory soon."
Another natural disaster: Magnitude 8.2 earthquake [hits off Mexico's southern coast](

Top business leaders in Texas and beyond [offered quick condemnation and calls for action]( after President Donald Trump this week announced [an end to protections for nearly 800,000 immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children](.
That means corporate America's political flex is about to be tested in a major way.
Big business has emerged in recent months as a moral arbiter of sorts, weighing in on hot-button issues that steer outside its normal frame of debate: climate change, bathroom bills, the appropriate response to a violent tide of white supremacy.

Memorial to teen killed over stolen drugs will come down from east Oak Cliff house
A memorial that accumulated outside the rundown east Oak Cliff house where two bodies were found in July, including a 13-year-old girl, [will be taken down](, the city said.
Beginning 10 a.m. Friday, code compliance will remove the memorial of teddy bears, balloons and notes, and clear the high weeds and litter outside the home in the 2200 block of East Kiest Boulevard where Shavon Le'Feye Randle's body was found.
Also found dead inside the house on July 2 was Michael Titus, 19, who at one point was named a suspect in Shavon's disappearance. Both died of gunshot wounds.
"In the near future, we will be asking for suggestions on what we should do with the house to honor Shavon's memory," Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway said in a written statement.
Caraway asked that instead of tributes, residents donate to local, family-oriented homeless shelters or battered women's shelters.

Surrounded by hundreds of alligators, Gary Saurage waded through murky floodwaters trying to [save his 15-acre reptile sanctuary just off Interstate 10](.
Hurricane Harvey had brought record rains, and the water was already above the fence of one enclosure, offering easy escape for smaller gators. The water had flooded Saurage’s home and come within a few inches of destroying the visitors center where he’d secured the dangerous crocodiles and venomous snakes.
Outside, Saurage had already lost tractors and a boat to the floodwaters. He was in danger of losing his livelihood, the rescue operation he calls Gator Country. He tried rounding up as many reptiles as he could before the storm, and now was trying to protect the rest.
In chest-high water, he wanted the gators to swim toward him

Finally...
At AT&T Stadium, its chefs aren't living by the everything's-bigger-in-Texas mantra when it comes to the concessions menu.
"We're not looking to go above and beyond to make something so grandiose," says executive chef Tony Sinese. It's a departure from AT&T Stadium's next-door neighbor, Globe Life Park, which serves [2-foot-long hot dogs]( during Texas Rangers games.
For years, its chefs have stayed away from the oversized food gimmicks and have instead released a small number of new items every football season in addition to old faithfuls like nachos and beer.
On the menu for upcoming Cowboys games, Sinese and his team are [debuting an Asian-inspired beef or chicken bowl, a taco bowl, a chicken wrap, house-made gelato, and a mac and cheese burger](.
