(Louis DeLuca/The Dallas Morning News) eclipse How North Texans watched the solar eclipse Millions of Americans dropped everything but their solar glasses or homemade viewing devices for a few minutes Monday to glimpse the much-hyped solar eclipse. [Across Dallas, thousands gathered for viewing parties](, as others merely stepped outside their homes, offices and schools for a look at the rare event. At Klyde Warren Park, one woman had success viewing from a Lucky Charms box. Another at the park spent $20 for a last-minute pair of eclipse-proof glasses. The first 3,000 visitors at the Dallas Arboretum received solar glasses, but with roughly 7,000 people in attendance, plenty of people casted shadows of the sun with cardstock and spaghetti colanders. Over at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, music set the stage. At 1:09 p.m., a song blasted across the plaza — Bonnie Tyler’s hit single “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” In near-perfect sync, visitors tilted their heads toward the sky. Lee Park. But [the council is a house divided over how to go about removing the longstanding monuments](. The battle over timing and process is illustrative of an ongoing power struggle on the council. The competing council members have held dueling press conferences and released conflicting plans over the best way to get to the same goal, possibly around the same time. Mayor Mike Rawlings has his own ideas, based on a recommendation of the Office of Cultural Affairs. Backing him are the council's four black council members. But his political foil, East Dallas council member Philip Kingston — supported by four of his own allies and some vocal Dallas activists — wants to go a different route and have the council "make a clear moral statement" against the statues as soon as possible.
