Midnight pizza meeting clears Texas Senate to push forward with rest of special session agenda
The Texas Senate met at midnight Thursday at the call of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick [to approve Gov. Greg Abbott's "must pass" sunset bills]( â a prerequisite to opening up the rest of the staunchly conservative items on the special session agenda that Patrick has strongly pushed.
Patrick and Republicans initially delayed final action on the sunset bills, but Patrick then stunned observers [by announcing senators would come back]( into session at 12:01 a.m. Thursday to resume their work â not in late morning or early afternoon, as is customary.
"I'll bring the pizza and the soda pop," he quipped from the chamber's dais. "Thank you very much."
Shortly after the Senate gave the sunset bills final approval during the midnight meeting, Abbott expanded his call to allow lawmakers to tackle any of the remaining 19 issues on his special session agenda.
The Senate then moved to refer their proposed bills â which include items like property taxes, school voucher-type help for parents of kids with special needs [and the so-called 'bathroom bill']( â to committees for hearings on Friday.
