Investigations
Dallas 911 system remains a gamble for callersÂ
Thousands of people a day called Dallas 911 expecting a swift answer. Only some of them got it.
The latest crisis has highlighted [longstanding and fundamental shortcomings in the city’s emergency call system  -- and they are still not fixed](, an investigation by The Dallas Morning News found.
The 911 center is so severely understaffed that the city has spent more than $400,000 in overtime in recent months just to get the phones answered. Its technology is outdated. Its management has been poor.
These lapses left the 911 system unable to cope when its operations clashed with the technology at a single cellphone company, T-Mobile and its subsidiary MetroPCS. That company gave 911 operators just a short time to answer before it activated a backup system that inadvertently overwhelmed the emergency-call center, our investigation found.
Fraudulent: Someone claiming to be a 911 operator has been [calling Dallas-area residents and asking about their immigration status](.
In the courtroom: A Glenn Heights woman [accused of killing her husband after finding him with another woman]( has been found incompetent to stand trial.

Ken Paxton case officially sent to Harris County, triggering search for new judgeÂ
Attorney General [Ken Paxton's criminal cases have been officially transferred to Houston](, triggering the assignment of a new judge.
In an order signed Friday morning, Judge George Gallagher sent Paxton's case file from Collin to Harris County. He also vacated four rulings made recently, including setting a September trial date and ordering Collin County to pay the prosecutors pursuing the criminal charges against Paxton.
Gallagher was forced to undo these decisions after the Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas ruled he must step aside by June 9. Siding with the attorney general, the appeals court said Gallagher could not continue to preside over the Paxton's cases after he moved them out of Collin County.
Editorial: Gov. Greg Abbott is [bogging down the special session with do-overs]( on legislative losses.

finally...
You can't make this stuff up: Last week,Ă‚ [a tree-trimming company massacred dozens of live oaks on Forest Lane](. Which would almost be hilarious -- I mean, really, it's called Forest Lane -- except it's anything but. The perps just up and decapitated the suckers -- around 100, per the latest estimate -- and left them for dead, or close enough, all because some out-of-town self-storage company wants its units visible from LBJ Freeway. Beware carpetbaggers swinging chainsaws, writes columnist Robert Wilonsky.
