A violent start to the week
Monday was marked by a series of high-profile crime stories.
Here's the latest:
Old East Dallas: A Dallas firefighter-paramedic was critically injured Monday [when a gunman opened fire in Old East Dallas](. A police robot later found the gunman and another person dead inside a home.Â

Fort Worth: [A woman was shot to death Monday]( evening outside of Ridgmar Mall in west Fort Worth.
Denton: A teen was shot Monday by [a ski mask-wearing gunman]( in Denton.
Austin: A student was taken into custody after [fatally stabbing a fellow student and injuring three others]( at the University of Texas at Austin on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Hurst: Police arrested an ex-firefighter Monday after [an hours-long standoff in Hurst](.
Carrollton: A 19-year-old man was charged with intoxication manslaughter after [fatally striking a woman on I-35 early Monday morning](, police said.
Balch Springs: The police chief in Balch Springs admitted Monday that a car full of teens was driving away from police when an officer armed with a rifle [fatally shot a 15-year-old boy in the head](.
Editorial: The Balch Springs Police Department's [changing explanations for how Jordan Edwards was killed]( are sickening.
And: A 23-year-old man accused of strangling a woman near Texas Christian University in Fort Worth [had previously been accused in two sexual assaults]( where the victim was choked, police say.

Sanctuary bill protesters stage Austin sit-in and rally nationwide
About 20 people were issued criminal trespassing citations Monday in Austin after refusing to leave a state building while protesting Texas' proposed 'sanctuary cities bill' as part of a nationwide day of protests.
Beginning around 10 a.m., about 50 protesters, including religious leaders, activists and local lawmakers, [blocked off the entrance to the State Insurance Building in Austin]( where several programs under the governor's office are headquartered.
Protesters also took to the streets for May Day immigration rallies in Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C.
Texas police chiefs: [Do not burden local officers with federal immigration enforcement](.
Party foul: A Baylor frat was suspended after hosting a 'Cinco de Drinko' event where [partiers reportedly dressed as maids, construction crews](.
Senate approves extending panels that allow seniors who fail STAAR to graduate
Graduation committees that allow seniors who fail the required state tests to earn a diploma anyway could [continue their work for another two years]( under a bill approved by the Senate Monday.
The so-called individual graduation committees -- which are made up of parents and educators -- were created on a temporary basis during the 2015 legislative session so students who failed STAAR tests could finish high school if the panels approved.
Magnet schools: Â North Texas' magnet schools [top annual Children at Risk rankings](.
Frisco ISD: Letters are going out to parents across North Texas in response to "13 Reasons Why," [a new Netflix series focusing on teen suicide](.
