Cowboys select Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton
The Cowboys were determined to address their pass rushing situation early in this year's draft. They did just that with their first round pick, [selecting Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton 28th overall](.Â
Charlton (6-5, 277 pounds) has [the ability to play both defensive end positions]( as well as move inside and play tackle in passing situations.
This marks only the third time in the last 10 years the team has spent a first round pick on a defensive player. Charlton is the first defensive lineman taken by the Cowboys in the first round since Anthony Spencer in 2007.

Texas House approves bill to wind down business taxÂ
The House late Thursday tentatively approved a bill that would [gradually eliminate Texas' business-franchise tax](.
Members weighed business owners' gripes about the "margins tax" being a burden against Democrats' arguments that to end it would jeopardize future funding of core state services such as public schools, state colleges and safety-net programs.
Democrats assailed the bill as a risky pander.
Dallas Democratic Rep. Eric Johnson, noting the franchise tax is the state's third-largest source of tax money, said it would blow a big hole in future budgets.

Texas charter schools get historic win as facility funding bill clears Senate
Charter schools got their first major win of this year's legislative session Thursday as the Senate approved funding for their facilities for the first time.
The bill, which passed 20-10, would [allow charter schools to access state dollars for facilities](, which they haven't been able to do since they opened in the state in 1995.
"This is a historic win for us," said Christine Isett, spokeswoman for the Texas Charter Schools Association. "This is the first time we've had any bill make it out of the Senate."
